Book publishing can be overwhelming and rigorous, and to make matters more difficult, when an author publishes their own books, they’re suddenly taking on all the responsibilities of an entire publishing house, which is normally run by tons of people with years of experience in their specialized field.

Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) is the largest trade association for independent publishers in the U.S. In this presentation, IBPA Director of Membership & Member Services (and an author-publisher himself), Christopher Locke will share important guidelines about the best practices for publishing—from pre-publication to post-publication, including the multiple pathways an author can take to publish their book; effective methods to sell their books to consumers, libraries, and bookstores; and more.

TOPICS INCLUDE:

  • Options for where to publish your books
  • Options for where to distribute your books
  • Book marketing advice
  • Setting realistic publishing and sales expectations
  • How to garner trade and reader reviews
  • ISBN best practices
  • Tips for finding freelancers (editors, interior book designers, etc.)
  • Networking tips
  • And more!

About the Speaker

As the IBPA Director of Membership & Member Services, Christopher Locke assists the 3,800 members as they travel along their publishing journeys. Major projects include managing the member benefits to curate the most advantageous services for independent publishers and author publishers; managing the Innovative Voices Program that supports publishers from marginalized communities; and hosting the IBPA podcast, “Inside Independent Publishing (with IBPA).” He’s also passionate about indie publishing, because he’s an author-publisher himself, having published two novels so far in his YA trilogy, The Enlightenment Adventures.
