From Virg Erwin —

UPDATE — The Military Writers Society of America announced that Cat Lo, A Memoir of Invincible Youth has been awarded the Gold Medal for 2009 memoir.

A small miracle: Cat Lo, A Memoir of Invincible Youth, has just been published. Cat Lo is a story of young men who volunteer for Swift Boats in Vietnam and about war’s indelible lesson for those who survive: life is too precious to waste. Thirty-six years after Vietnam, I met a marine convalescing from Iraq. I asked him, “Do you want to talk about?” It is a question no one had ever asked me. “It was hard to know who were civilians—who were bad guys,” the marine said as he described being caught in a violent ambush. For me, the marine’s story resurrected memories of sailors patrolling narrow rivers and canals, their naïve sense of invincibility shattered by Viet Cong patiently waiting in bunkers with rockets. Cat Lo is about conflict of compassion for the South Vietnamese who are caught in the middle of war without option of neutrality, and confusion by the question: Who is the enemy and who is not?

The intended audience are wives and daughters of men who go to war. You can read a selected chapter on www.catlo.net.

From Tom Leech —

My new book has arrived. On the Road in '68: A year of turmoil, a journey of friendship is a lookback at a 6-months round-the-world trip, covering 27 countries. That year has been marked by many observers as the most frenetic of the last half-century. Books, magazines and TV specials have described the disturbances, confrontations and violence that occurred worldwide in that year.

Our trip started when an old buddy and I got leaves from our employers to head off for a few months good time in Europe. When he returned, I answered one of those life-expanding questions: "When will I get this opportunity again?" and kept on traveling...to Greece, Egypt, India, Kashmir, Nepal, SE Asia, Hong Kong and Japan. The journey was marked with the usual travel activities and scenes, but most notably by the friendships and hospitality of people I met along the way, many of whom I am still in touch with and who contributed to the book now.

“I was a foreign correspondent in 1968, and Tom Leech’s account of his trip around the world is a time machine that takes me back to the world as it was then. It is more than travel writing. It’s a personal account of what it was like to be young and on the road in a year that made history, and a reminder of how much the world has changed since then.”
—Tom Fenton, International Columnist, PRI’s “The World” and former International Correspondent, CBS News

This is my first self-published book, available now from my new website, www.presentationspress.com, and on Amazon.com.

From Nesta Aharoni —

Should we pay our kids for good grades? Should we relax an arbitrary curfew in order to allow our teenagers more personal freedom? What should we do about R-rated movies and offensive song lyrics? Is it okay to discipline toddlers? Is it helpful to allow kids to negotiate their own punishment? Does praise build confidence or arrogance?

Nesta Aharoni, author of My Goodness: My Kids, Cultivating Decency in a Dangerous World, has been recognized for tackling these tough questions, and more. She is proud to announce that her book has won the prestigious, national Mom's Choice Award. Mom's Choice Awards is the benchmark for excellence in family-friendly media, products, and services.
